Downtown Vancouver orthodontics: What to do if your braces break or get damaged

Traditional  braces for teeth are comprised of brackets and wires set according to each patient’s individual needs to maneuver misaligned, crooked, badly spaced or crowded teeth into their correct, straight position. This system is very effective, but if any part of the structure is damaged, it may compromise the results and increase the length of your treatment. That’s why, if your braces are damaged or broken, you should inform your orthodontist as soon as possible.

Damage to braces is often caused by eating hard or sticky foods like nuts, ice, gum, and taffy or through traumatic events, such as a sports injury. Sometimes, however, the adhesive used to fix the bracket to your tooth can become loose. In any case, it’s important to take the following steps if you cannot get to your orthodontist immediately:

  • Treat any cuts with ointment recommended by your doctor or pharmacist and seek medical assistance for any serious injuries. remove any pieces of your braces that are loose in your mouth  to avoid swallowing them, and bring them to your orthodontist’s office as soon as you can.  Theses pieces can sometimes be repaired at minimal expense rather than having to be replaced entirely.
  • If a wire is poking into your lip or gum, try to push it into a more comfortable position with the eraser end of a pencil or a cotton bud. If you can’t make it comfortable, cover the end of the wire with a small ball of wax or sugarless chewing gum to protect your mouth and book time at your orthodontic office to have it trimmed.
  • If a bracket (the part attached to your tooth) or appliance comes loose, your orthodontist will need to secure it back in place with new adhesive.
