Getting Used to Your Invisalign Aligners

Getting Used to Your Invisalign Aligners - Daher Orthostyle™ Bankers Hall - Orthodontic Treatment

You’ve decided to take the leap and make steps towards your perfect smile. You’ve sat down with your orthodontist and decided that Invisalign is the right option for you. Invisalign is quite a different product than braces, so you may be a little tentative. But we are here to answer any questions you have along the way! For now, here are three tips to getting used to your new Invisalign aligners:

Keep Them Clean

You’re going to be investing time and energy into Invisalign, so taking the proper steps is important in making the treatment efficient and worth it. The best way to do this is to keep them clean! Build-ups in between your teeth and the aligners will prevent your aligners from working properly, prolonging the amount of time it will take to complete your Invisalign treatment. Now more than ever, it’s imperative to keep your teeth clean. It will be more comfortable for you from beginning to end!

Chew those “Chewies”

Like most patients, you probably want your treatment done as soon as possible.  In order to move from one aligner to the next, your teeth must fit perfectly. Air gaps prevent the aligner from working to the best of their ability. There is something you can do to increase your chances of sticking to the pre-determined timeline. “Chewies” are small cylindrical cushions made of a plastic-like material called Styrene Copolymer. Biting down on them a few times a day will help the aligner to fit tightly against your teeth.

Grin and Bear It

Think of your new aligners like a new pair of shoes. You know how your feet are sore for the first few days that you wear those shoes? That’s because the leather needs to stretch and form to your  feet, and likewise your feet need to get used to your new shoes. Similarly, your aligners will need to be “broken in”. That being said, bear the discomfort for a little while. The more you wear your aligners, the quicker your mouth will start to feel normal again. Most patients report feeling more comfortable in as little as a week or two!

It’s as simple as that! Follow these three tips and Invisalign will be a comfortable and effective experience for you.
