Life After Invisalign

Life After Invisalign - Daher Orthosmiles - Orthodontists in Calgary

As you near the end of the constant aligner regime, you probably can’t believe how perfect your smile has become. But remember that once you are finished with the active portion of your treatment, you will enter the next phase: retention. If your Invisalign treatment is almost complete, then this is for you!

What is the Retention Phase?

Our bodies are quite incredible in that they are always changing. The downside of this is that this means your teeth will continue to shift even after Invisalign treatment. The retention phase is managing these minor shifts so that they don’t negate all of your hard work and money. The more consistent you are, the easier it is to keep your teeth from shifting back to pre-treatment formation.

How Can I Maintain My Smile?

  1. Retainer: Just like with traditional braces, you will be swapping your aligners for a retainer. A retainer will give your gums and teeth time to adjust and solidify into their new positions. Your orthodontist will determine how often and what kind of retainer will be best for you. Regular use is necessary to keep that smile looking its best!

  1. Oral Hygiene: You won’t need to clean your teeth as often as with the aligners, but that doesn’t mean you get to give it up completely! A clean mouth is a healthy mouth, and that means brushing twice a day and flossing at least once. Bacteria and plaque build-up will weaken your teeth and gums, making it easy for your teeth to shift and reverse the effect of Invisalign.

  1. Regular Check-Ups:  Just because you’re done with your aligners doesn’t mean you should skimp out on check-ups either. Make sure to schedule regular check-ups with your dentist to track your progress. It is even possible that you may need to go in more often at first, depending on your unique situation.
